Thank You vs Sorry...and what it says about you

Say you and a random stranger arrive at an entrance way simultaneously and only one of you can fit through the door at a time. What do you do?

Then, say the other person steps back and offers you entry first. Do you say "Thank you" and walk through, or "I'm sorry" and smile nervously with your head down, attempting to pass as quickly as possible so as not to inconvenience anyone? Or, do you just walk through, roll your eyes at the stranger for even thinking of trying to go in front of you, and then stick your nose in the air?

For most of my life I was the "Sorry" gal (SG), have only become the "Thank you" gal (TYG) in the last few years and could only be the "Eye Roller" gal (ERG) in my dreams. Believe it or not, this says a lot about me as a person and can give someone a hint into how I feel about myself. Here's the difference:

A) The SG feels she's not important enough for anyone to inconvenience themselves for her benefit. If they do, she has to make it up to them by apologizing and thus letting them know that she is aware of her worthlessness.

B) The TYG feels that, while she doesn't necessarily think she's better than anyone, she does deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. And if someone wants to offer her a gesture of kindness, she will accept it graciously. She can do so because she doesn't have the same hang-up as the SG...She feels worthy to be given to.

C) The ERG is just a bitch. Come on, let's call a spade a spade.

So, this is the challenge I put out to all the SG ladies (and men)...When someone does something for you like opening a door, letting you go first or offering you his seat, instead of apologizing, say Thank you. "Because," as L'Oreal has pitched for years (whether you believe it or not), "I'm worth it." I know it sounds cheesy, but if you practice it enough you might actually start to believe it;)

Thank you

Hey, Jodi,
I agree. I used to be the HBG (head butt girl) -- no WAY was anyone gonna get in my way or go first -- but now I've become the TYB (Thank you Babe) and always thank EVERYONE - including doormen who open doors or push the elevator button, taxi cab drivers - even though I aid them -- and bus drivers as I get off the bus. It makes me feel much better than the HBG I was)
